On Saturday October 12 approximately 55 volunteers picked up over 1000 pounds of trash from along the shoreline of Stony Lake. Although the event was scheduled for 12-3pm, several volunteers worked until 4:30pm. The lake shore was divided into eight sections, with seven teams handling shoreline by foot, and another team handling the water above the north dam by kayaks. Along with thousands of yards of fish line retrieved (the primary target), were ropes and other forms of line, pipes, hundreds of plastic bottles and bags, many clothing items (particularly socks), towels and blankets, many tackle boxes and lures, several swim fins and goggles, a boat’s manufacturer’s plate, and a copper urn (?!). Also through this effort we may have identified eagle scouts willing to build and erect fish line disposal receptacles as their project.
