Volunteering

Position Title: LEVSN Volunteer Organization: Clinton River Watershed Council.
Location: Lake Clinton Watershed (Oakland & Macomb County)
Time Commitment: Flexible (2–10 hours/month)

Position Summary: Join the passionate network of volunteers working to protect and preserve the health of Lake Erie and its watershed through chemical water monitoring! As a Volunteer with the Clinton River Watershed Council, you’ll contribute to meaningful environmental research and stewardship by collecting water samples, monitoring local ecosystems, and raising awareness in your community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Field Monitoring: Conduct water quality testing using the YSI ProQuatro multiparameter instrument to measure key indicators such as pH, temperature, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen.

  • Data Collection & Reporting: Record and submit monitoring data using the LEBAF data sheet to contribute to support long term tracking of Lake Erie’s health.

  • Reporting Environmental Concerns: Observe and document any ecological concerns (e.g., erosion, algal blooms, pollution, invasive species) near monitoring sites, and promptly report findings to the Clinton River Watershed Council.

  • Training & Development: Attend initial orientation and training workshop on data collection methods, safety protocols, and environmental literacy.

Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm for environmental conservation and citizen science

  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions

  • No prior science experience needed training is provided

  • Must be at least 16 years old (under 18 requires parental consent)

LEVSN COLLABORATING PARTNERS leverage the standardized data and educational tools produced by the Lake Erie Baseline Assessment Framework to answer research and management questions, activate residents, and catalyze collective impact across the Lake Erie Basin. They are a vast network of educators, researchers, innovators, and agencies that value collaborating with volunteer science groups and are committed to helping shape their priorities and evaluating the effectiveness of their programs.

LEVSN LOCAL HUBS organize community volunteers to engage in critical monitoring efforts that keep a finger on the pulse of local water quality and answer locally relevant scientific questions about water resources. They span conservation districts, watershed groups, parks systems, and government entities that serve as boots on the ground, protecting local water resources across the Lake Erie Basin.
