SWIMMING SAFETY

Swimming in the watershed’s inland lakes, in the Clinton River, or in the Clinton’s tributaries is generally safe, but there are some exceptions, and swimming always poses some risks.

DO:

  • Check Water Quality Advisories: Before swimming, check with local authorities or environmental agencies for any advisories regarding water quality or potential hazards in the Clinton River or lakes within the watershed. For information on current beach closures and swimming safety, please visit the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s BeachGuard page here.

  • Observe Designated Swimming Areas: Swim only in designated swimming areas that are monitored and considered safe for recreational activities. Find a place to swim here.

  • Practice Good Hygiene: Take a shower before and after swimming to remove bacteria and contaminants from your skin. Avoid swallowing water while swimming.

  • Wear Sun Protection: Apply sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, especially during extended periods of sun exposure.

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially on hot days, to prevent dehydration.

  • Supervise Children: Always supervise children closely when they are swimming or playing near water to prevent accidents or drowning.

  • Use Safety Equipment: If boating or participating in water sports, wear appropriate safety equipment such as life jackets or personal flotation devices.

  • Respect Wildlife: Avoid disturbing wildlife and their habitats while swimming or enjoying recreational activities in the water.

DON’T:

  1. Don't Swim During Advisories: Avoid swimming in the Clinton River or lakes within the watershed during water quality advisories or when authorities advise against swimming due to pollution or other hazards. Please visit the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s BeachGuard page here.

  2. Don't Swim Alone: Avoid swimming alone, especially in unfamiliar or unmonitored areas, as it can be unsafe in case of emergencies.

  3. Don't Dive into Unknown Water: Never dive into water if you are unsure of the depth or if there are hidden hazards such as rocks or debris beneath the surface.

  4. Don't Litter: Dispose of trash properly and avoid littering in or around the water to help maintain a clean and healthy environment for swimming and aquatic life.

  5. Don't Swim Near Boat Launches: Avoid swimming near boat launches or areas with heavy boat traffic to minimize the risk of accidents or collisions.

  6. Don't Swim During Severe Weather: Avoid swimming during severe weather conditions such as thunderstorms, high winds, or lightning, as it can be dangerous and increase the risk of drowning or injury.

  7. Don’t Swim in the Clinton River or its Tributaries After Heavy Rain Events: Bacteria, high water levels, and fast-moving water can make local waterways dangerous to swim in. Review water level gauges for STERLING HEIGHTS, AUBURN HILLS, MT. CLEMENS, and FRASER.

  8. Don't Swim if Unwell: Avoid swimming if you are feeling unwell or have open wounds or infections to prevent the spread of illness or contamination.
